In the early days on the Internet before the world caught the online bug, long before e-banking, e-commerce, e-technology, e-books, e-dating and e-love became the norm, there was the regular quiet reading where you walk to the bookstore and tell the seller the book of your choice which you seek to get. You have to be personally at the bank early in the morning before your every need is attended to, and you meet a pretty lady on the street, go out for a date or two and after that exchange hugs on the first date, on the second date, a kiss if its your lucky day and perhaps on the fifth date, she finally lets you indoors for a drink after she sees the disappointed look on your face.
But these days, all that has been thrown out of the window (literally). It rather happens that you meet the lady on a dating site with those downright preposterous names, you engage in safe and courteous conversation for a brief period and then you go deeper into sexual preferences and other related issues(if you know what I mean). A few days(chats) later, you profess your love for her and she says the same thing and lo and behold, a new relationship has started. Well, I do concede that not all online dating begin, carry on and end up this way but a very good percentage do, on a fair scale. Some have argued though that the anonymity allows usually timid and coy people to express themselves in ways they would not ordinarily have done. Others simply say that online dating is faster and safer (sounds like an advert for an airline). But opponents think it plain silly.
For one, as much as the Internet has made the world a global village with great prospects for meeting people, discovering new friends and strengthening business ties, such things of the heart such as love, emotions and marriage should be left for the real world. I heard of a couple who met on the internet and personally saw each other on their wedding day. The groom was disappointed that the ‘wife’ wasn’t as tall as her pictures claimed, so he called off the whole charade (I think he had a thing for tall busty blondes).
Anyway this doesn’t mean that there aren’t lovely stories with happy endings and ‘online’ beginnings. But caution is one watchword, when considering online dating. A lot of people are not actually who they claim to be and use that to deceive unsuspecting (so perhaps you should start suspecting) members of dating sites.
So next time, when you think about dating someone on the internet, think carefully, he just might be your partner with his online look!
